A Fresh Take on the Lauren Pattern
A Fresh Take on the Lauren Pattern
We’re always looking for ways to get the most out of our favorite patterns, and the Lauren dress pattern is no exception. As the weather heats up, Lauren is always a go-to option for a sweet summer silhouette! Instead of sewing it up as a full dress though, we’re turning it into a breezy summer top, perfect for staying stylish and cool through the long summer days full of outside adventures.
The Idea
The Lauren dress is known for its baby doll silhouette, feminine details, and ultra useful cross strap back design to keep those shoulder straps from sliding off. But with just one simple tweak—shortening the skirt—you can transform it into a wear-everywhere top, perfect for pairing with high-waisted jeans, linen shorts, or a cute summer skirt.
How We’re Doing It
Instead of attaching the full-length skirt that comes with the Lauren pattern, we’re cutting it several inches shorter—hitting just around the hip or slightly below, depending on your style. The goal is to maintain the same gentle drape and shape that makes Lauren so flattering, but in a length that feels light and easy for summer. We recommend a finished length for a top being:

8 ¾” |
9 ½” |
10 ½” |
11 ¾” |
12 ½” |
13 ¾” |
15 ¼” |
16” |
*Since the shoulder ties are adjustable, the finished length is measured from the top of the bodice to the hem.
You can keep the same construction process for the bodice, and simply adjust the skirt length while cutting it at the same width mentioned in the pattern. We recommend doing a quick muslin to test your ideal top length. Whether you want something cropped or tunic-style, the Lauren pattern gives you a great foundation to customize from.
Why We Love It
This kind of pattern hack is a great reminder that sewing your own clothes gives you ultimate versatility. With just one pattern, you can create multiple wardrobe staples. The Lauren dress-turned-top is easy to make, endlessly wearable, and a fun way to refresh your sewing plans without starting from scratch.
Plus, since the top straps are not fixed, and the back has elastic in it, this truly can be a “grow with me” garment, by simply creating a deep hem as we have shown here that you could let down as you need a longer length!
So if you’re looking for your next summer project, grab your Lauren pattern, your favorite fabric, and try this simple, stylish twist—we promise you’ll love it just as much as the original!
